Day to Day Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where the Unique Tanzania Voyages team will welcome you. After a brief introduction, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation in Arusha, a charming town located at the base of Mount Meru. Arusha is a vibrant hub and the gateway to your Kilimanjaro adventure. Take the evening to rest, explore the town, or enjoy a cultural tour. The evening will include a pre-trek briefing to discuss your climb and prepare for the upcoming days.

DAY 2: ARUSHA TO RONGAI GATE (1,950M/6,398FT) TO SIMBA CAMP (2,600M/8,530FT)
Your Kilimanjaro journey begins with a drive to Rongai Gate, located on the northeastern side of the mountain, near the Kenyan border. After completing the necessary registration, you’ll begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest. The trail ascends gradually through cultivated fields and into the forest, where you may spot wildlife like colobus monkeys. You’ll spend the night camping at Simba Camp, set in a serene forested environment.

DAY 3: SIMBA CAMP (2,600M/8,530FT) TO SECOND CAVE (3,450M/11,319FT)
Today’s trek takes you through the moorland zone, offering stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The path allows for a steady pace, giving you time to acclimatize while enjoying the diverse landscapes, including giant heathers and lobelias. You’ll arrive at Second Cave for your overnight camp, where the panoramic views are breathtaking.

DAY 4: SECOND CAVE (3,450M/11,319FT) TO KIKELEWA CAMP (3,600M/11,811FT)
Today, you’ll continue trekking through the moorland towards Kikelewa Camp. The path offers dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest peak on Kilimanjaro. The terrain becomes more rugged as you ascend, and the air gets thinner. Upon arrival at Kikelewa Camp, take time to relax and soak in the views.

DAY 5: KIKELEWA CAMP (3,600M/11,811FT) TO MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4,330M/14,206FT)
Today’s trek brings you closer to Mawenzi Peak as you ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located at the foot of Mawenzi. The trail offers steep ascents through alpine desert landscapes. The views along the way are spectacular, with rugged volcanic rocks and barren terrain. Upon reaching the camp, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the tarn and the towering spires of Mawenzi.

DAY 6: MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4,330M/14,206FT) TO KIBO HUT (4,700M/15,420FT)
The trek to Kibo Hut is a crucial part of the climb. Crossing the lunar-like landscape of the Saddle, a barren area between Mawenzi and Kibo, the trail is rocky and challenging. The terrain is largely devoid of vegetation, and the air becomes thinner as you ascend. At Kibo Hut, prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

DAY 7: KIBO HUT (4,700M/15,420FT) TO UHURU PEAK (5,895M/19,341FT) TO HOROMBO HUT (3,720m/12,205ft)
Summit Day! You’ll begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak around midnight. The trail is steep, passing through rocky terrain before reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunrise and the immense satisfaction of reaching the highest point in Africa. After descending to Kibo Hut for a rest, you’ll continue your descent to Horombo Hut for the night.

Altitude: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit), then down to 3,720m
Hiking Distance: 22km / 13.7 miles
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours (total)
Habitat/Environment: Arctic Summit Zone to Moorland

Meal Plan: Midnight snack at Kibo Hut, breakfast after descent, lunch en route, dinner at Horombo Hut.

DAY 8: HOROMBO HUT (3,720M/12,205FT) TO MARANGU GATE (1,860M/6,102FT) TO ARUSHA
On your final day, you’ll descend through the moorland and rainforest, enjoying the changing ecosystems one last time. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and then be transferred back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
